Week 1 - 23rd March 2020

Weekly inspiration for you at home

IMPORTANT UPDATE

In light of the most recent restrictions set by the Prime Minister we will be cancelling the book exchange on Thursdays.

Next week we’ll be doing a week of al fresco morning videos from our gardens at home with a little daily challenge for something the children can do outside at home!

Reading and Writing

  • Pick a letter and have a timed treasure hunt to find anything in the house or garden beginning with that sound!
  • Set up circle time for your favourite toys to read them a story. Younger siblings can attend if desired!
  • Can you make name tags for your family - maybe for their bedrooms or where they hang their coats up.
  • Can you write your name with sticks, leaves and anything else you find in the garden?
  • Have a look in your reading folder for your book and some extra activities.

Physical Development & self-Care

  • Do a timed countdown to get your coat on and zipped by yourself. Let us know your personal best!
  •  Use a tape measure to see how far you can throw and how far you can kick a ball.
  • See what animals you can make with just scissors, paper and glue!

Mathematics

  • Play ‘Spot the missing number’. Put each number on a piece of paper/card and take turns removing one whilst the other person closes their eyes. Can you spot the missing number?
  • Play shops. Each item needs a price so count coins carefully and sometimes you might have to give your customers change!
  • See how many different shapes you can make with 5 cubes/lego blocks/number blocks.
  • Make a picture timeline of your day. You could even peg it up!

Being Imaginative

  • Build a fort. What are you hiding from? Maybe you can make some ‘Keep out’ signs and even draw a ‘Wanted’ poster of the monster!
  • Why not use your toys to set up your own little school at home. You can make the rules. What will you serve for lunch?
  • Paint a rainbow to go on your window. Children out for a walk can spot them and count them.
  • See what you can use as a paintbrush in your garden. Can you make a picture with mud paint?

Understanding the World

  • Plant a seed in a plastic/glass cup so you can watch the roots grow.
  • Pick your favourite part of your garden and take a photo every week to track how it changes.
  • Make bird food with seeds/oats and coconut oil or lard.
  • Bird watch: What birds like visiting your garden? What are they called? What is their birdsong like? Can you make a bird book about your garden?

Best of Online & TV

  • Joe Wicks is doing online PE lessons every morning at 9am.
  • Twinkl have a free membership for parents at the moment
  • Montessori Centre Internationals have free parent membership with a free e-book about Montessori at home. www.montessoritraining.org.uk/network
  • The BBC Earth documentaries are on iPlayer and Netflix. Some scenes are pretty brutal!
  • The BBC ‘Go Explore’ App is linked to the Early Years Framework through favourite CBeebies characters

A quick note to say...

Just remember, these are only ideas. We know that without the structure of coming to pre- school, there might be some tricky days and days heavily reliant on TV and that’s ok! Don’t put yourself under pressure to constantly ‘home school’ – your children are curious, compassionate and creative and will learn and flourish with you, regardless.

Please feel free to share the good, the bad and the ugly on Tapestry.
